NEW VISA POLICY (WHITE PAPER)
The United Kingdom has recently introduced significant changes to its immigration policies, as outlined in the new white paper titled "Restoring Control over the Immigration System." These reforms aim to reduce net migration and have direct implications for international students, including those from Pakistan.
The post-study work visa, known as the Graduate Route, has been shortened from two years to 18 months. This change affects students planning to stay in the UK after completing their studies.
The time required to apply for permanent residency has been increased from five to ten years, impacting long-term settlement plans for international students.
New regulations impose higher English proficiency standards for student dependants and skilled workers, necessitating better preparation for language assessments.
Physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) will be phased out by December 31, 2024. Students must register for a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to obtain an electronic visa (eVisa).
From January 2025, students must demonstrate higher financial means to cover living expenses, with amounts set at £1,483 per month for London and £1,136 for other regions.
These policy changes necessitate careful planning for prospective students from Pakistan. The reduced duration of the Graduate Route may influence decisions regarding post-study employment. Stricter language requirements and increased financial thresholds require thorough preparation. Additionally, the shift to an eVisa system mandates timely registration with UKVI.
